Corn Hill Arts Festival in Review

In was long and tiring, clear and rainy, slow and busy, but all-in-all a good, worthwhile, learning experience. Here is a visual recap of my weekend!

It started at 6am Friday morning with an interview with RNews (which by the way did not run until Sunday)

Saturday was the first day of the festival, and this is what we saw out our front window! I started to realize the magnitude of craziness that was to comeThen it was time to set-up. Had to be there and have the truck back home by 8:30am. So 8-9am was set-up time, 9-10am was wait-til-people-show-up time.
Here is my booth set-up for day 1. All nice and good to go. Morning started out fine. Got my first sale, some notecards, and all was good
Until about 12:30, why the sky went black and out came a whole bunch of wet stuff.

The rain cleared up by 2pm, but the crowds never came back. I got lots of visits from neighbors who stuck it out, and lots from one super helpful lady, Bonny, who leant her golf cart to helping me move my prints in the morning and evening. But the damage was done. Packed everything up and looked forward to a better showing on Sunday.

Sunday morning, I changed the layout of my booth so everything was out. I think this set-up was a big improvement, and having photos outside my booth, led people into it

With Sunday came browsers, and buyers, and students from RIT looking for strange subjects

At the end of the day, I had made back my expenses, and a little on top. I received lots of positive feedback, gallery proposals and other suggestions. A big thank you to everyone who came, everyone who helped and everyone who bought stuff. Now its time to relax a little, and look forward to next time!

Corn Hill Festival: July 11+12, 2009

This weekend I will be participating in my first festival show, the juried Corn Hill Arts Festival! I will be in a section called the "Emerging Artists" which is for under 25 year old talent just getting started in the world of art sales. There has been a lot of publicity this year because it is the debut of the emerging artists section. Being a Corn Hill neighbor, and also because I worked on the book (Corn Hill and its Arts Festival: The First Forty Years), I have been asked to speak to the media on two occasions.

I have started a new style of image making, combining my old passion (photography) with a new passion: cycling. I bring my camera on rides, and basically shoot from the hip. I set up my shots, anticipating what kind of effect I want, then shoot away. The results vary widely from interesting to unrecognizable, and everything in between. Here are a few of my favorites so far. I will continue to update these as I take more, so check back often!

It was 50 degrees today in Rochester, so I had to get out and do something, never mind the rain. So Josh and I went for a hike down at Mendon Ponds. Of course, the rain started as we pulled in, and stopped as we were on our way out. It was wet and muddy, but worth it for the fresh air.

Making Stuffed Peppers with Grandma!

Yum! Grandma taught me all the secret italian ways to delicious stuffed peppers. You have to add all the right seasonings in the meat, stuff 'em in the pepper, then season the sauce just right too! Simmer a few hours, and serve with a side of very vocal mmm's all around!

DVP Wedding Videography Brochure

Duprey Video Productions is a multifaceted company, but with spring approaching, they are trying to reach out to the newly-engaged audience. I created this brochure, utilizing some of my photography, from scratch. Communicating mostly by email, my parents and I discussed content, wording, placement, style and the desired look of elegance. The final product was printed on cream paper with a gate fold, meaning it opens from the center. Tomorrow they will receive their opening debut at a local bridal show.

My friend Peter hosted a Merlot tasting for his wine class last week. We tried three Merlots: once each from the bottle, decanted, and with various cheeses. Afterwards, we sampled four stunning dips on toasted bread. It was amazingly delicious! With all of that made by two people, you can see how the kitchen got.

Election Night 2008; Hope for 2009

Politics, while very important to the success of this nation, have never been able to hold my attention for more than a few minutes. This election was different. There was a candidate who spoke the language of the American people; Someone who actually made me want to listen; Someone who I trust can make a tremendous difference in the United States and the world.

I was at Venu Resto-Lounge & Nightclub when that candidate won the presidential election. I was in a crowd of similarly ecstatic people who cheered, danced and drank, many with tears in their eyes, as the screen flashed Barack Obama, President-Elect. We all have our own reasons to be joyful, but the resounding sentiment echoing through the night remains in my ears: 'Proud to be an American.'

The easy part is over, Mr. Obama. You will forever be in the history books, hopefully as one of the best presidents this country has ever seen. You've got our attention, no pressure, but don't let us down.

Grand Opening at MonarchExpress

MonarchExpress Print and Copy Center is where I have been spending the last few months of my life. I started in August, working on interior signage, ads, mailers, brochures, variable data projects, and customer design work, in addition to learning the machines and administrative duties. I rarely get to use my photography skills in this position, but the Grand Opening was one of those opportunities. It was a fun filled day that started with a ribbon cutting, tours and prizes, and ended with great food and drink. Below are a few of the things I have co-designed for the store, with Charles the creative director. The 3' by 7' banner on the wall is one of my photographs, and the flyer, brochures and guest register are all pieces that I worked on. Someday I will expand on this and show you more of the work I have done in the store.

John Builds his New Computer

We don't see a whole lot of photos of John smiling... but for once he was so happy, my taking photos did not bother him. Why? Because he finally was able to buy the computer parts he had been dreaming of for so long.

A few weeks ago, he and our friend Josh sat in our living room assembling this monster new computer. Josh was there mostly for guidance and moral support. John insisted he do all the work, and therefore, take all the glory of constructing his very own machine.

The Hidden Cabin

My aunt and uncle are fixing up this neat little cabin, and we went to visit for a house warming party. You have to go off-road a bit to get there, but it is surrounded by woods and very peaceful. I went for a hike with my dad and cousin, and we found a tree graveyard. The second picture is the "creek" they told us to look for. What's that? You don't see it either? haha.

The Surprise on Cascade Mountain

Saturday, September 6th
2am: Wake up, make sandwiches, pack cars
3am: Gas up & leave Syracuse
7am: Arrive at the base of Cascade Mountain, near Lake Placid in the Adirondack Mountains
Surprise soon to be father-in-law with all of his children (minus the one that just gave birth), and climb mountain
9am: reach 4,000+ ft summit
11am: take off smelly socks and go eat breakfast.

This panoramic was actually taken at the false summit. By the time we made it to the summit, it was raining and my camera was safely stored in my weather-proof backpack. On the right is John's brother, Jeremy, who flew in from Denver to be a part of the big 50th birthday surprise.

It's not every day you get to photograph in a million+ dollar home. This place was incredible. Located on Cayuga Lake, the property boasts a three bay garage, putting green on the water, beach vollyball and tennis courts, children's playhouse, dock with three boats, boathouse with screened in deck, full bar, game room and so much more. Die Fledermaus- The Bat

Die Fledermaus is a unique show that played one night only in the Smith Opera House last week. It featured local talent in addition to professional actors, pianist and director. Before the rehearsal, I was able to get a few portraits on stage (1). The leads perform their heartfelt, but sarcastic good-byes (2). The entire cast did an outstanding job staying in character, even when they were not in the spotlight (3). Last, this character is pleading with the judge to lend him his outfit(4).

Environmental Education Center Grand Opening

One of my many jobs this week was photographing the Grand Opening of the IESI/Seneca Meadows Environmental Education Center. The ceremony was about an hour long including a ribbon cutting, tour of the LEED certified facility and honoring of the billion dollar company's president, Mickey Flood, seen below with his wife. The structure is simply stunning, and features the handiwork of a local craftsman, who designed and built all the display cases.

So Long, and Thanks for all the Fish

So much has happened since Korcula. There was Kotor, Budva and Herceg Novi in Montenegro; Medjugorje, Mostar, and Sarajevo in Bosnia; and my last days in Dubrovnik, which included a night on the beach with my girls Anna and Kara. Kara and I made it home a lot easier than getting to Dubrovnik, but it wasn't smooth. We had to pay $80 for a taxi in NYC, and nearly missed our bus, but luckily, I made it home in one, tired piece.

I knew craziness was coming, but not quite how much.

Wednesday 2pm (local) left Dubrovnik.
Thursday 7am (local) arrived Waterloo, NY.
Friday 10am and Saturday noon- graduation ceremonies at RIT.
Sunday 9am- Photographed 130 runners in 5k race.
Sunday 5pm- John proposed in Highland Park.

Wait, wait, what?

Yep... I'm jet lagged, an alumnus and engaged!

The last two weeks have been a combination of working through those three things... oh, but did I mention my car died? And, that I don't have a job yet? Ok, so add to that, selling my beloved oldsmobile for $335 scrap metal, updating my resume and website, and sending out job applications.

Not to fear, I got to see my family and show off my ring with a graduation party in there, which also helped raise some money towards a new automobile.

But thats not all. I have a gallery show I am looking forward to in a few weeks... you'd think I might know what work I was showing. Nope. Still editing my 8,000 files from Croatia which I then need to print, matte, frame, caption and price.

Day by day I am crossing things off my list. Currently at the top is preparing my show, getting a job, and finding a car. In my spare time, I contemplate wedding details.

I'd rather be in Korcula...

This weekend was fantastic. We took a bus trip to Korcula Island, about 3.5 hours north of Dubrovnik. Yes, a bus trip to an island. The bus actually got on a ferry, and then continued driving to our destination. We stayed at the One Love Hostel, and were the first guests for the season. There were six photo students and two croatians that came with us, and three Aussie's staying at the hostel. All of us and "z" the owner, had a great time. The highlight of the trip for me was renting a bike and going to the small town of Lumbarda, 4 kilometers from Korcula Town. It was one of my goals for coming here, and was truly a dream come true. We passed vineyards, harbors, houses and shops, a pony, and lots of stunning sea. One of the Aussie's from the Hostel, Lachie, who is actually biking through Croatia and Europe, came as well. I was definitely slowing him down from his normal pace, but he seemed cool with it, and helped me deal with my unkept rental bike.

Croatia, Electronics and Me

Croatia, electronics and myself just cannot find a way to get along.

I have had technical difficulties since arriving here with everything from my dad's laptop not wanting to wake up, to my point and shoot not wanting to shoot, and most regrettably, to my good 17-85IS lens giving me an error message when I photograph. The laptop is fine now and I got my point and shoot to behave for a while, so I could take it out at night or when I didn't need my DSLR. However, that was short lived because I recently smashed it on a rock, so that the lens is crushed, twisted and makes a funny noise. It still turns on, and is able to capture images... but very, very blurry ones. So, if anyone wants a camera to make blurry art with, let me know. My point and shoot gone also means I no longer have a way of capturing video. :(

I have three lenses for my Canon 20d:
17-85IS F/4-5.6 - My all purpose, use it most of the time, lens. Currently works when zoomed out to 17mm, fails when I try to use the zoom. Ask me again tomorrow, for everyday it requires a new trick to make it work.
100mm F/2 prime - A beautiful lens for portraiture, low light, and a single plane of focus. Dropped once on Mt. Srd, slightly scratched exterior, but still works perfectly and makes beautiful images.
24mm F/3.5 tilt/shift - Borrowed from RIT for the quarter. Useful for architecture and stitching panoramas, but not suitable for anything requiring speed since it is manual focus only.

My other camera is a plastic, medium format film camera. Problems? Dropped once, but it being plastic and not having any electronics in it, makes it okay! I am also unsure if the film is closed tightly enough, but we will find out when it gets developed. Only two rolls remain, so this cannot be a relied upon medium.

Basically, the lens I use 90% of the time, is causing the most problems. I am in Croatia where I can not have it easily examined. To have it diagnosed and fixed would require shipping it home and waiting a month to hear anything, at which point I will no longer be in Croatia. What can I do? I researched the error online have determined it to be the lens connectors. I talked to my insurance company, who said they do not cover maintenance. I don't think this is a maintenance issue, since the lens is only a few years old and should last much, much longer. Canon can't do anything quickly and doesn't offer any type of exchange program. My best option is borrowing lenses from other students here, which they are gracious enough to let me do. However, this is only a temporary fix and I will have to deal with everything when I return to the states (on top of graduating and job hunting).

I will have to replace at least one camera, one lens, and probably make two new lens purchases. A tilt/shift to call my own, and a telephoto which is still a missing element in my camera bag. All on the budget of a recent grad. Wish me luck.

The Hospital Experience

One of my friends hit her head a few weeks ago, and had been very dizzy for a few days. We decided she should have it looked at just to be sure she didn't have a concussion or anything more serious. It was 7 o'clock one night, and we decided to find the hospital. Two bus rides and singing to some 80's American music under our belts, we arrived.

The hospital had that unreal, haunting quality you see in bad horror movies. We stood waiting at the reception desk for at least 10 minutes, watching the nurses go by on their snack breaks, ignoring us. Finally, one of them stopped long enough to ask us what we wanted. We handed over the slip with my friend's information that the emergency center had sent us over with, and she disappeared for a bit.

We were brought into a room with three beds, just behind the nurses station. One was occupied by an older woman, with a bandage on her arm. My friend sat, and I stood, looking at all the things around. It looked like an emergency center, but after seeing how much of the hospital was dark, I think it was just their late night area. A very tall and thin, male doctor came in, followed by a shorter man that looked like an assistant, or a nurse. There were three female nurses also milling around somewhere. Service was very slow, but communication wasn't terrible. There were a few rough patches, but it all worked out. After drawing blood, and having her tell her story a few times, we were led by the male nurse to another part of the hospital.

Hardly any lights were on, hence the eerie quality. We thought we were the only ones there, but there was another doctor in the new room they entered. I stayed outside and waited, as I was directed. Soon, we were back in the original room, and I was being kicked out again as a new doctor came in.

I took some photos while she was examined some more. The place was incredibly photogenic. The bright colors made it feel more like a fast food restaurant than a hospital. The medicine was on a shelf, in plain site, not hidden in cupboards like back home. The overall experience was just so different. The nurses would talk and laugh about things openly (in Croatian of course, so we had no idea what was so funny). Some answered cell phones, one even while she was drawing blood from my friends arm. The shorter male nurse even asked my friend out as we were leaving! What a strange place. It was clean, and they did a good enough job from what we could tell, but I hope the next time I go back is just with my camera, not another potential patient.

Herceg Novi, Montenegro

This is from last week, but it never made it up here, so I am trying to catch up. Enjoy.

Last weekend we had a planned, combined field trip with the photo and CS kids heading to Montenegro. We were to leave at 8:30 am, and return late that night. With four girls and one bathroom, I woke up at 6:30am and started the shower marathon. By 7:30 we were all showered, dressed, and packing to leave for the adventure. The sky was gray, and the clouds were leaking a little, but we were hopeful we would drive out of the bad weather when we drove out of the country.

7:30am, a knock at the door. The trip has been canceled due to rain. The now, wide awake and ready to go girls and I, were very upset by the news. We still wanted to go someplace, regardless of the rain. So, we walked to the bus station, and we went to Montenegro anyways! There was a bus leaving at 9 to Herceg Novi, just over the border in Montenegro. For just over $20, round trip, the passport stamps alone were worth it. As we boarded the bus, we remembered we were to tell our professor if we were going to leave the country.

Anna called Denis. "Uh, Hi, Denis. ... we are on a bus to Montenegro... Yeah, we found a good deal on the buses, so we decided to go... yes we have our passports... okay, we will... thanks, bye." I could imagine the shock in his voice, even though I couldn't hear it.

We had a great time. It was overcast, but we never got rained on once. The sun even peaked out a few times. We met some amazing people, including this guy who is biking from Germany to China. His adventure puts mine here to shame, but I defintily recommend checking it out at cyclingwithoutborders.org.

One of the first things we found after getting off the bus, was an outdoor market. The people were very friendly, but few spoke English. One woman had me try three different kinds of cheese. They were really good, and I'm not a cheese person!

We met one little old man who spoke barely any English, but we tried to communicate anyway. He would speak, and we would smile, and he would think we understood him. After about 10 minutes of this, he showed us his wallet, and very slowly, in broken sentences, told us the picture was of his daughter, and she spoke English. He was very proud to show us.

Costumes, Peacocks, and Cold Water

The island of Lokrum is just off the coast of Dubrovnik's old town, and took only 15 minutes to reach. However, we didn't look like your average tourist when we boarded the boat to go there... we were in authentic Renaissance garb. All seven photo students, our professor, and Brana, a representative from the school who got us the outfits, participated in this dress up day. She was dressed as a joker, the men were all in tights, and the girls had long, heavy dresses. All except Anna, she had a nice light dress that actually looked good on her!

When we got to the islands, we were greeted by wild peacocks which call the island home. They are unafraid of people, and walked very close to us. While we werent afraid of other tourists stealing from us, we had to watch the bread we brought with us, because the beautiful birds were trying to pick our pockets!

The island offers many rocky beaches, with breathtaking views of the sea. We were determined to swim as the day was sunny and warm, but the water was not inviting. There was a little pond by the sea that offered original views, and we only had to go in waist deep to get there. That was a good enough wake up call for me! A few people jumped in the still icy water, but we didnt have much time, for the last boat home leaves at 5pm. No one is allowed to sleep on the island, for it is said that it is cursed. We didnt want to upset any mystical natives, so we left the island, and by the time we got back to the apartment, I was ready for a nap.

The Croatians take their sports seriously, and they like to reward their athletes that do well, with a concert! Last Friday night and this Monday night there were concerts on the main strip of Old Town in celebration of athletic jobs well done. The Friday night one was very well attended and had two big bands, while the Monday night was a little smaller and just one band. It seemed to be more locals out for the first event, and more tourists at the second. Kara and I were a bit confused when we heard "Celebrate," in English as we approached Old Town, but the rest of the songs were all in Croatian. I enjoyed the music of the opening band, but the techno stuff was just not my style.

Beware of Dogs

The girls and I had a good laugh last night as we exchanged stories about all the guys hitting on us here. It seems everyday we add a new person, and most of us have been hit on by the same men at different times. It does matter the age difference, they dont care! These guys are 25, 35 and 45 from left to right.

Bachelor Number 1 seemed like a nice guy when I talked to him. He interpreted for me at the market, and it wasn't really creepy until I found out he had also hit on Anna. Bachelor Number 2 liked to watch me work, and was the reason I was able to get some photos in a certain church. Bachelor number 3, also known as "Cassanova," has really gotten around. After my encounter with him where he could not understand my being in a long distance relationship (no matter how I explained it), he tried his moves on Kara and Kayla, also to no avail.

There are more men like these out there, but this is just meant to be a warning for all of you ladies who visit Dubrovnik: Beware of Dogs.

We woke up this morning to a dark, rainy day, and a dark apartment. We called the landlord, who called the power company, and found out that all of Gruz was without power until 4pm while they did maintenance. Cold showers for everyone! While we were discussing what to do about the contents of our refrigerator, Kayla draws a deep, dramatic breath and stares directly behind the couch which I am sitting on. I jump up in reaction and move to a chair a few feet away. My first thought is there is a spider crawling near me. After a few moments, she finally relaxes enough to tell us that she saw a mouse.

I laugh hysterically, while terror creeps slowly through the apartment. Kara finishes her dark shower, and hears us talking about a mouse. She says "A mouse, where? Here? In the kitchen?" Kayla says, "No, in your room." The living/dining/bedroom has a new resident! Kara lets out a nice little scream to break the silence. Time passes as we sit around, discussing what to do, staring at the couch where it ran to. I dont think any of us had plans to kill the animal, we just wanted it out of our apartment. I went into the shed to find some brooms, thinking we can scare it out and then show it the door. Two of us were now armed and ready, so I lifted the couch and we all kind of jumped in unison. Nothing.

We took everything off the couch, took off the pillows and cover. We started to pull out cushions, and Kara screams again! There is a box type thing under the cushions, which the mouse crawled out of and onto the floor. Then he disappeared again. We looked for him some more, but he went MIA. We finally got out the door to start our days, but he is still waiting for us when we get back. Though by then, we will have power, so we wont be fighting him in the dark! Stay tuned as our new pet is bound to make another appearance...

I went to Old Town to find a mass for easter. I found a small procession through the streets, followed by a mock sword fight before making it to mass. I saw some intricate palm plaiting and egg decorating which was pretty neat. This was the church I went to for Easter. It was definitely said in Croatian and standing room only, but it was pretty! Sorry the photo is so bad, it was a rainy day, so I only brought my point and shoot camera, not my DSLR.

We (Kayla, Anna, and I) are at the grocery store, deciding what to have for dinner. The idea for nachos comes up, and we are really excited. Kayla checks, but doesn't see any ground beef. I'll go ask, I say.

I go up to the meat counter, which is more like a butcher shop than a Wegmans, and I ask the young man if he speaks English.

"A little," he responds.

"Do you have ground beef?" I ask.

He makes a motion with his hands, that I interpret to be sliced. I say "No," and try to make a motion that would convey the "ground" part. We look at each other kind of blankly. He says something in Croatian to another girl working there, and she comes over.

"I interpret, I speak English, what do you want?"

"Do you have ground beef?" I ask again.

She says something in Croatian to the man, and then looks back at me, "Veal or Turkey?"

"No beef?" I ask again.

At this point, Kayla has joined me, and I am looking at her for possible help.

The two workers are speaking in Croatian to each other, eventually she looks back at me and asks how much we want. The boy is cutting off a slab of beef.

I turn to Kayla, "I guess we could just cut some meat into small pieces and brown it..."

She seems okay with the idea, but I don't know how much to order. Kayla says half a kilo, so I go along with that and tell the woman.

The man cuts off some more beef, and I am expecting to get a big hunk of it, but then he puts it in a grinder. And magically, there is ground beef! Horray!

We made delicious nachos that night, and I made a hamburger the next night with the leftovers. You never realize how amazing hamburgers are until you haven't had them for a few weeks. I'll admit, it wasn't a traditional Easter dinner, but it sure was tasty!

It wasn't something I had worried about, or even considered before I needed clean clothes. Laundry was part of our rent, and would be done weekly, for us. It may have seemed odd for someone other than me or my mom to be washing my panties, but it would give me more time to photograph and enjoy Croatia, so I quickly got over it.

A few days after arriving in our apartment, we were told the cost of rent was going up, that we couldn't keep the provided towels and needed to buy our own, and that laundry was no longer included. Fantastic. The cheery picture we were painted back when we were sitting in blustery Rochester of a brand new, fully furnished apartment, everything included, with a pool and coffee area to spare, was quickly getting more expensive with less features. The pool, the coffee shop, and even the "brand new" was overlooked (considering we found food in our fridge, trash in our bins and dirty dishes), but we needed clean clothes. Back home, I could go two weeks without doing laundry by wearing dress pants a few days, and re-wearing pants a few times. But here, I dont have as deep of a closet, and cloths smell like smoke after only one day of wearing them.

No one was happy, and the school decided to step in, even though thats not in their job description. They were to meet with the landlord and get him to stick to his promises. As the days passed, we didnt know how long we could wait. Finally, we get an email from the school saying the landlord will do our laundry, but not until next week, because we have to much right now, and he wouldnt be able to handle the heavy loads. We all knew this was complete crap, but at least we only had to do it ourselves once.

There are no coin operated laundry mats in Dubrovnik, or probably all of Croatia for that matter. Our options were: 1. Bring it to a hotel (?), 2. Go to the CS professors house and use his machine, 3. Bring it to a professional service ($10 to wash a load, $20 if you wanted them dried to), or 4. Wash them by hand. I'm on a tight budget, and the CS people were bombarding the professor with their clothes, so hand washing won out.

I've never appreciated a washing machine so much. I had a tub in the bathroom filled with hot, soapy water. I put some clothes in and rubbed them together for a few minutes. Then I rinsed them under the sink, rang them out as best I could, and ran out to the porch to hang them in the sun, trying not to drip water all over the living room on the way. Repeat this cycle until the drying rack, four chairs, and all the door handles have clothes hanging from them. Yeah, I don't really want to do that again. My back was tired from leaning over the tub, my hands hurt from ringing things out (pathetic, I know) and I wasted a perfectly nice day by being inside!

But I had clean clothes, and they smelled nice. By the time, I finished it was late afternoon and the sun was hiding. It was also kind of cold. Not a good combination for drying clothes the natural way. About two days later, I had clean, mostly dry, wearable clothes again (but even the pockets were still a little damp when I put on my jeans).

Part of the deal the school made with the landlord involved a schedule for cleaning and laundry. According to the first schedule we were sent, my apartment was slated for a Friday cleaning day. The revised schedule told us Wednesday. Now you can imagine we were a little confused when we get a knock on the door Monday morning saying we need to vacate so our apartment can be cleaned.

So I said to the landlord, "Does this mean our laundry will be done today as well?"

"Yes, yes," he replies, "you need to separate the colors and the whites and place them in bags."

"Okay, so will our apartment be cleaned every Monday? I ask because we were told Wednesday, is this the new day?"

"Yes, yes." He says in his Croatian accent.

Okay, so Kara and I quickly round up our dirty clothes and place them in grocery bags by the door. I left for the day, and was excited about returning home to some fresh clothes. About 6:00 that night I return to the apartment to find it organized (not really cleaned), with familiar looking bags by the door. The clothes in them were not wet, nor was there evidence that they had been removed from the bags. I saw the landlord and asked why our clothes were not washed.

"There were three apartments to clean today, I can't do everything in one day, its too much!"

Mind you the schedule we received showed one apartment to be cleaned and laundry done (not ours) for Monday. Three were cleaned, and none were garnished with fresh clothes. Because I said something to the landlord, he took our clothes and said he'd bring them back in the morning, but we would have to dry them since he did not have a dryer (they are rare here).

I'm not sure where we heard this from, but some how all of us were under the impression that the washer machine was actually in our building. We explored, throughly, all the floors of the house, and found no such thing. Although, I did find a reserve of a few hundred towels, how interesting. Kara and I were nervous about where our clothes had been taken to, and how long before we would see them again.

Around noon the next day, some of them were returned! They were very hot and wet, so we spread them outside and all over. By the end of the day, we had all of our clothes back and drying throughout the apartment. Thank God. So far nothing seems to have shrunk, or be terribly discolored, but we are all a little wary of the services here. I guess we should be thankful that ours was done, as most of the other apartment residents can't really say that yet.

So will they come next Monday, Wednesday, Friday, or ever, and do we really want to trust them with our clothes again? The saga continues...

the Old and the New

If you have seen the tiled roofs of Old Town Dubrovnik, you may not have noticed the different shades that exist. ...And this is how they want it to be. After the war in the early 1990's, many of the roofs needed replacing and the original stone quarry was not available. Thus a new quarry with a new color was used. You can still find some of the old tiles if you look hard enough. The original stone is being slowly phased out and replaced with the new color to make the town uniform again.

If you take a look at my flickr account, you will see more examples of roof tops. The history fascinates me, and is part of a topic I am going to explore further here. The war ended only fifteen years ago, but most of Dubrovnik is rebuilt so well that it is out of sight, out of mind. I am trying to find more evidence of the war, and want to do some sort of comparison between then and now. As I stood on the wall, looking out at the beautiful blue sky and sea, I tried to imagine war ships in the harbor and devastation in the city. I found it extremely difficult to imagine such horror when standing in natural surroundings which are so awe inspiringly beautiful. I'm not sure what to look for, but I am going to the library in Old Town tomorrow to see what I can find. I have projects in mind to explore these themes photographically, but I want to have more of a sense of understanding and a more defined purpose. If anyone has any thoughts or ideas on this, let me know. I only have rough ideas right now, but I will be refining them over the next few weeks.

If you didn't notice, welcome to the new site! Something Croatia will be replacing Something Visual Media for the next 3 months. I hope the new site will give you an idea of what its like here.

Where do I start? After a few bumps in getting here, we are settled and exploring. We have gone out and done new things every day since being here. Today is day 11 since leaving home, but only my 9th day in Croatia, and I have taken somewhere between 900-1000 photographs. Our first assignment for class is a general first impressions assignment, so I will have to narrow these down to 20-30 to present in class. Our photo "class" last Friday consisted of a three hour walk around the ancient walls of Dubrovnik. The walk is about a mile long, but we went slow and took LOTS of photographs. I also mapped out our route to the Old City using Google Earth and discovered it is roughly 2.5 miles. See the map below.

Now imagine walking along the water every day to class. It's not like RIT and the quarter mile. I actually enjoy this walk! I have made an image of the same spot every time we walk by it, just because it never gets old. It really is unbelievably beautiful here. I am always wondering how the locals are accustomed to this, and dont stop just to be in awe of their surroundings every moment. I have seen most of Babin Kuk (the part of the peninsula our apartment is in) and a bit of Lapad (the other part) and most all of Old Town. The amazing thing about the Old Town is how the view changes every time you take five steps. As a photographer, it is Heaven. There is no wrong place to take a photograph, each step is just more beautiful. Most photographers dont have this problem, but it is a good problem to have.

Today is the first day my feet were not screaming at me. My little toes are still in the midst of the battle over who can get the bigger blister, but otherwise the soreness is going away. Or maybe I am just getting used to it. I have done more walking in the last ten days than probably in the rest of my life combined. Four to five miles a day, minimum. Sometimes in sneakers, sometimes in sandals. Most of it uphill or up steps. My calves will be amazing. And since we carry our groceries back from the store, which is another half mile or so, my arms are getting in on the game too. Hooray for getting toned in Dubrovnik!

The other fun adventure of today, was hand washing laundry! Our landlord was supposed to be doing laundry for us, but for some reason isn't doing any until next week. Well, we couldn't wait that long and they don't really have coin-op laundry here, so we washed it by hand and hung it outside. They do have washers you can pay for, but everyone hangs clothes outside to dry. It is entertaining when you are walking around Old Town and see a clothes line with big white panties on it. (pic to come?)

Dubrovnik, Part 1 of many

Dubrovnik is amazing, I just can't describe it all. It was not yet sunk in that I am really here. I feel like I am just a short drive from home, although I know I am really two days of travel time away. Our apartment over looks a harbor, and its a nice view especially at night. I have taken over 300 photos in the first couple days of being here. Right now they are all mostly tourist shots, pretty scenery, etc. Once I get this out of my system, then I will be able to move on and take some more meaningful images. I have found the best way to post many images is to use a service called flickr, so I will upload a bunch of photos to that, and a select few to this blog. Hope you enjoy, please leave me comments I love to hear from you, and am curious who will be watching!

So this is the first post of my new crazy adventure. I will be in Croatia for the next 11 weeks, but for tonight, we are in London. We is myself and Kara, my travel buddy. We are part of the seven photo students from RIT taking this study abroad trip. There are also seven computer science students from RIT who will be living below us. I only have a few more minutes of online time, so this will have to be a short post.

Traveling here was a long endeavor. Started by driving to Syracuse, then a train to NYC, then a plane to Heathrow airport in London, then a bus to Gatwick airport, London, then a bus to the hotel because we missed our flight to Dubrovnik... then there will be a flight tomorrow to Zagreb, and then FINALLY we arrive in Dubovnik tomorrow at 3:15pm.

New England Holocaust Memorial

I find this image hauntingly beautiful, but that is also how I felt about this site. Situated in the middle of two streets, in Boston's North End, the New England Holocaust Memorial consists of six glass towers etched with six million numbers representing those killed in the concentration camps. It is one of the best designed memorials I have ever visited, and I encourage you to experience it for yourself.

I just rediscovered this image while looking for something else, but it is something I wanted to share, even though it was taken last July.

Hi, I am writing from my brother's house in Cocoa, Florida. Last night we opened our first christmas present and found a trip to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at Disney's Magic Kingdom! We went to Downtown Disney first, then to the park from 7pm-12am for the special evening event. It was relatively empty and we were able to see a lot of the park in only a little bit of time. We saw fireworks and the Christmas parade as well as all the usual stuff. This is the first year that the castle has been decorated this way, and it was really a sight.

It can be very hard to take original photographs in a theme park, especially Disney where they point out the picturesque locations to you. I tried to combine two staples of the Magic Kingdom, in a pleasing composition, with this shot looking down Main Street toward the castle. It gives just a tiny glimpse of the Disney experience which is to much to be summed up into one image. Enjoy!

Rochester's Hot Spots

Digital Asset Management(DAM), a class I took this Fall quarter, created a magazine on local Rochester hot spots. I acted as the Creative Manager for the project, overseeing the production of both photography and design. As the manager, I did much proofing, editing, and finishing touches, but I also made a few layouts. Basically, the beginning and the end, specifically, the Contents, Introduction, Information, Calendar of Events and Creators pages are ones which I designed.

This was a good exercise in team workflow, as we shared many files and utilized Xinet as our DAM software. The digital version (which is the same as the printed form minus the contents and divider pages) can be viewed online here: http://cias.rit.edu/~dam/. The final product is a top-bound, spiral bound piece, consisting of twenty-six pages.

Supported the local wine industry this weekend with a nice trip down the west side of Seneca Lake. Nine wineries in five hours... pretty impressive. Below we have the lake as seen in a reflection of Prejean Winery, our host and barrels at Herman J. Weimer, Dad with his six-pack from Seneca Shore, Mrs. Coleman trying to read the upside-down map, and the group (minus me) in front of Fox Run.

This is part of a group project where we took scientific test tubes and had to repurpose them. My group made a sweet clock filled with a liquid that rose to express the time. This is just the logo for it, but if it ever goes into production, I'll be sure to let you know!
